Pekerti a not-for-profit organization that was formed in Jakarta in 1975. Pekerti was the first Fair Trade member to be established in Indonesia and one of the first in the world. Our mandate is to supplement the incomes of subsistence producers and people living in poverty in rural Indonesia through the development and sale of traditional crafts and folk art. We are a member of the World Fair Trade Organization and in addition to individual product sales offer wholesale services.
Pekerti assists our Fair Trade producers to develop and export their Fair Trade products – a service which may otherwise not be available to them. Our associated micro enterprise loan institution Koperti is available to provide producers with a credit scheme for investment in a cooperative.Pekerti’s community development sector provides producers with training in the 10 Fair Trade principles, business development and product safety, and undertakes projects in emergency relief, housing reconstruction and long-term economic recovery.
Pekerti’s overall functions stem from both Pekerti Foundation and Pekerti Nusantara Company, which was founded in 1979 and facilitates sales and export of our producers’ handicrafts.
