Interactive Workshop Empowers FFTI Members to Craft Compelling Sustainability Stories

With rising stakeholder demands for organizational transparency, sustainability reporting has become imperative for companies to disclose their environmental and social impacts transparently. However, sustainability reporting can be challenging for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) lacking expertise. As Indonesia’s leading Fair Trade network, the Forum Fair Trade Indonesia (FFTI) recognizes the value of sustainability reporting to enable its member organizations to effectively communicate their ethical practices, FFTI organized a virtual sustainability reporting workshop in February 2021 in collaboration with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The workshop aimed to build member capacity in telling compelling sustainability stories.

The full-day virtual workshop, held on February 24, 2021, introduced key concepts such as economic, environmental, and social aspects of sustainability and what they mean in the context of fair trade. The participants learned about widely adopted international frameworks and standards for sustainability reporting, such as the GRI Standards, and the value of standardized reporting to benchmark and communicate sustainability efforts.

The training session included interactive discussions facilitated by GRI representatives on material sustainability topics that could be relevant for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to potentially cover in their sustainability reports. The participants gained a first-hand understanding of best practices for disclosing their organization’s impacts in a structured manner by learning about the end-to-end process for preparing sustainability reports using GRI Standards.

By the end of the engagement session, members developed plans to integrate sustainability reporting as part of their organizational practices going forward; they also received accessible learning opportunities, tools, and resources from FFTI to support them in their journey. As a pioneering Fair Trade network in Indonesia, FFTI remains strongly committed to building member capacity on sustainable and ethical business practices through regular impactful workshops. The organization aims to empower Indonesian fair trade small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to succeed and effectively communicate their sustainability stories.
