How FFTI Members Learned to Evaluate and Improve Their Fair Trade Practices
Continuously evaluating and improving alignment with fair trade principles through rigorous self-assessment is vital for organizations to truly integrate ethical practices. As a pioneering umbrella organization for fair trade groups in Indonesia, the Forum Fair Trade Indonesia (FFTI) assists its members in enhancing their fair trade practices through self-assessment. In September 2022, FFTI organized an insightful virtual self-assessment workshop to equip members with a structured methodology to thoroughly evaluate compliance with fair trade’s 10 key principles.
The virtual training aimed to equip members with an understanding of the importance and process of self-assessment to evaluate and improve their Fair Trade practices. Many participants from diverse FFTI member groups across Indonesia joined the interactive workshop. The participants included industry and trade actors, representatives of handicraft, furniture, textile, batik, coffee, food and other associations, as well as representatives from various Indonesian government ministries and agencies.
The participants learned about key topics like the purpose and methodology of self-assessment, and received step-by-step guidance on compiling a comprehensive report. They also learned about the 10 principles of Fair Trade and how to thoroughly assess their organization’s compliance to these principles.
Self-assessment helps members benchmark their Fair Trade practices and create roadmaps for improvement. The training equipped members with the knowledge to evaluate their processes and commit to higher Fair Trade standards.
This online self-assessment workshop exemplifies FFTI’s continued efforts to build member capacity through ongoing training programs and knowledge sharing; other initiatives include session on Building a Sustainability Report, SEO training and more.
By conducting capacity building activities, FFTI strives to nurture the growth of Fair Trade groups in Indonesia for the welfare of artisans and local communities. It aims to drive the Fair Trade movement further through empowered member organizations.
