Legal status of the organization:
Established in 1988 as a bilateral project between the Indonesian and the New Zealand governments, the project activities entered its final stage at the end of 2005.
The project activities were transformed into a limited liability company to take care of the business and social aspects, the marketing arm of the pottery industry and the incorporation of 4 cooperatives as the shareholders of the private limited liability company.
The company is owned by 3 (three) village women potters cooperatives and 1 (one) staff cooperative; the village women potters are concurrently acting as producers to the private company as well as to other parties. The annual shareholder meeting is the highest instance within the organization, deciding upon the business performance of the company, appointment of the company’s Board of Directors and the Supervisory Board, as the responsible organs in running the day-to-day operations.
Goal and purpose of the organization:
The private company is responsible for the business and social aspects of the existing pottery industry, e.g production, marketing, financing and distribution of pottery produced by some 221 women potters organized as members of the village women potter’s cooperatives.
Besides pottery as the major product group, the company is also involved in developing other potential handcrafted products produced by Lombok artisans, such as wood-based products, rattan and sea grass articles.
Within the private company’s organization, a department for corporate social responsibilities and community development is structured and takes up issues related to technical assistances and development for the production as well as confronting with issues related to health care, education and environment.
Information about the artisans:
Some 221 women potters are involved in the daily production of pottery destined to 95% for the export markets. The women potters are, besides being members of the village cooperatives, also independent individuals, who are not only producing for the private company but for other parties as well.
The women potters are paid by the individual items sold to the private company and the selling price to the private company is based on product costing plus profit for the women potters. As already mentioned above, 90% of profits made by the private company at year end will be returned in form of dividends to the 4 cooperatives, who, among themselves as members, will distribute the dividends.
Distribution of income and profits:
In respect of income distribution, LPC is a unique set-up as the company is owned by the women potters and the company’s staffs through their respective cooperatives; profits made by the private company will be returned to the shareholders, e.g. the women potters and staffs, in form of year end’s dividends as well as increased company assets of the private limited liability company; with another words, the majority of income and profits are destined for the village community and the company’s staffs, aiming at improving their livelihood and therefore, standard and quality of life, better education for their children’s children and health care.
